Homeownership Counseling

In an effort to promote local sustainable home ownership, Eastern Sierra Community Housing offers home ownership and foreclosure counseling services. Staff members are qualified to help clients navigate all phases of the home ownership process and ensure that they are up to date with the best information and skills – from housing counseling and financial literacy to loan servicing, collection, foreclosure intervention, and much more. In addition to holding bi-annual public workshops on local home ownership issues, staff is available to meet with you one-on-one to answer your specific questions on a number of concerns.

Homeownership Assistance

We provide a variety of homeownership assistance programs. Here are some of our active programs:

Down Payment Assistance programs active in the Town of Mammoth Lakes and Mono County (various funding sources including: PHLA, CalHome, HOME, CDBG)
Land Trust Below Market Rate Ownership

Home Rehabilitation

We help preserve existing housing assets in our communities. Our active home rehab program currently serves Mono County (including the Town of Mammoth Lakes) and Inyo County through various funding sources.

Legal Aid Office Hours (remote)

We are a proud partner of California Indian Legal Services to host a remote legal aid station in our Mammoth Lakes office. California Indian Legal Services specialize in Federal Indian Law, seeking to advance and protect Indian rights, self-determination, and tribal nation-building. Since its inception in 1967, the organization has broadened its scope of work, providing consultation on tenant rights and serving as a crucial community asset in the Eastern Sierra.

Our staff helps facilitate weekly legal aid office hours, connecting our community members to free or low-cost legal resources. Our office also serves as an access point for clients to fax, email, or communicate with their attorneys, and to seek out additional housing resources.

Legal aid office hours are Tuesday’s from 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM. It is not necessary, but we recommend calling our office in advance to schedule an appointment.

Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Construction Loans

We offer low-interest construction loans for the construction of ADUs throughout Mono County.

Rental Counseling and Homelessness Prevention

Rental counseling includes providing clients with housing resources as well as one-on-one case management in the search for stable, affordable housing. This includes an in-take process with an assessment of tenant’s rights/legal needs, and the development of a Client Action Plan. Rental counselors are able to enter clients in the Coordinated Entry System for homelessness programs, and assist clients in the navigation of complicated housing options. This includes understanding affordable rental rates for their income level, budgeting, additional community support linkages (food, health, etc.) and employment searches. Our counselors also provide direct referrals to a variety of other resources in the region.

Fair Housing Resources

Our knowledgeable staff can assist you in understanding your Fair Housing rights and filing Fair Housing claims.

Community Emergency Support

We administer a variety of emergency programs including California’s Home is Key COVID-19 rent relief program. We also work with local entities to support residents during weather and environmental crisis.
